The Other Side of the World
Jonathan Williamson
Korea, 1950: war correspondent Alan Whicker hears American rival Marguerite Higgins's recipe for success – get up earlier, run further, take more risks. Years later, the BBC's Tonight programme sends him on an unprecedented round-the-world shoot with only cameraman Cyril Moorhead and sound recordist Freddie Downton. From Singapore's house of death to Hong Kong, where Cyril's unauthorised aerial filming draws Chinese anti-aircraft fire and a diplomatic storm, through Tokyo's cosmetic surgery clinic and Manila's rapids, Whicker drives his exhausted crew relentlessly. While BBC executives debate disposing of him, his reports become a sensation – earning him his own BBC series: Whicker's World.
